Welcome to Rally Flashback, where we look back to a previous edition of the upcoming round of the World Rally Championship. This weekend it is back to Europe, with the classic event of Rally Portugal.
Hayden Paddon got his first ever World Rally Championship win last weekend at Rally Argentina after Jari-Matti Latvala rolled out of the lead. The final epic power stage that sealed his win is a mesmerizing downhill descent on rough roads with no shortage of fans lining the surreal, rocky landscape.
Hyundai is currently doing the final pre-homologation tests on their brand new R5-spec car, a 180,000€ all-terrain rocket ship designed to be 90% as fast as a full WRC car at 40% of the price. Now they just need a livery, and they’re turning to the fans for help.
Before this season of the WRC, Mads Østberg suddenly found himself without a codriver after longtime partner Jonas Andersson left to drive with Pontus Tidemand. Speculations started and a lot of names were dropped into the mix, but Østberg didn’t look further than to his WRC rival Andreas Mikkelsen.

Anyone who’s been following Sébastien Loeb since his World Rally Championship days knows that he’s a beast, and he’s been proving that all over again at this year’s Dakar Rally. He rolled on Stage 8, but he and co-driver Daniel Elena managed to put the car back together to limp to the end of the stage.
